Introduction
Choosing a life partner is one of the most important decisions in life. The right choice brings success in this world and the Hereafter. Islam has given clear guidelines for this, and following them greatly reduces the risk of a wrong decision.
Guidance from Hadith
The Prophet (peace be upon him) gave a clear criterion for selecting a spouse:
"A woman is married for four things: her wealth, her family lineage, her beauty, and her religion. Choose the religious one, may your hands be blessed (i.e., may you succeed)."
— Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim
This guidance applies equally to both sides — the groom and the bride's family must both prioritize piety and character.
Factors to Consider
The following should be verified when selecting a life partner:
- Religiosity and character: Care about prayer, fasting, and what is lawful; quality of morals.
- Family background: The family's values, culture, and environment.
- Education and profession: Educational qualifications and the reality of livelihood.
- Temperament: Levels of anger, patience, and tolerance.
- Mutual understanding: Compatibility discovered through pre-marriage meetings (with a Mahram present) and proposal discussions.
Istikhara and Consultation
Before the final decision, performing Salat al-Istikhara and consulting guardians and trusted scholars is extremely important. Istikhara is a means of seeking goodness from Allah, bringing tranquility to the decision.
Conclusion
A righteous life partner is a special blessing from Allah. By prioritizing piety and character, taking family counsel, and deciding through Istikhara, married life will be beautiful and blessed, God willing.
