Importance and Determination of Mahr in Marriage

Introduction

Mahr (dower) is an essential part of the Islamic marriage contract. It is the wife's rightful due, which the groom is obligated to pay to the bride willingly and wholeheartedly. Its importance is clearly described in the Quran.

The Quranic Ruling

"Give the women their dower with a good heart. If they, of their own accord, remit any part of it to you, take it and enjoy it without fear of any harm."

— Surah An-Nisa: 4

This verse proves that the Mahr is the wife's due, not a courtesy — and the right to waive it belongs to the wife alone.

Significance of Mahr

  • It ensures the wife's honor and financial security.
  • It highlights to the groom the seriousness and responsibility of marriage.
  • The marriage contract's valuation remains incomplete without the wife's consent.

Principles of Determination

The principles Shariah has given for determining the Mahr:

  • According to ability: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that whoever can afford little should give even an iron ring. Pressuring beyond means is inappropriate.
  • Mutual consent: The amount should be determined with the consent of both parties.
  • Keeping it easy: The bride's family should also stay within means — a moderate Mahr is a source of blessing.
  • Clear documentation: The amount should be clearly recorded at the time of the marriage contract.

Right to waiveThe wife's alone
Difference from dowryMahr is the wife's right; dowry is forbidden

Conclusion

The Mahr is the wife's right — determining and paying it properly is the religious duty of every husband. Setting the Mahr with a balance of ability and ease brings goodness and blessing to both families.
