Introduction
After marriage, the responsibility of maintaining relationships comes not only between husband and wife, but with two families. Maintaining good relationships with both the in-laws and one's own parents is a teaching of Islam and a precondition of a happy household.
Relationship with Parents-in-Law
- Honoring the husband's parents as one's own parents.
- Accepting their advice with good faith, and resolving differences humbly.
- Small acts of service — feeding, caring, showing respect — are the path to Paradise.
Relationship with One's Own Parents
Even after a daughter moves to her husband's home, her parents' rights remain:
- Keeping regular contact and checking on their wellbeing.
- Monthly visits when possible, or at least meeting by phone.
- The husband should also encourage keeping in touch with his wife's parents.
Ways to Maintain Balance
Equal sincerity with both families is the ideal. For this:
- Keeping a fair balance in visits to both families.
- Not criticizing one family subjectively in front of the other.
- Discussing problems directly and humbly rather than making indirect complaints.
- Giving equal importance to both families on Eid, anniversaries, and special occasions.
Dua
One should regularly pray for love and unity within the family:
رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا
Rabbighfir li wa liwalidayya warhamhuma kama rabbayani saghira
Conclusion
Good relationships with both families bring extra blessings and peace to a household. Following the principles of respect, fair balance, and direct discussion makes married life a bridge between two families.
